According to legend, a fisherman searching for crabs in the area discovered an icon of the Virgin Mary inside a crevice of a rock. The icon was found intact despite being in a harsh environment. The fisherman, seeing this as a miraculous discovery, took the icon to a local church. However, the next day, the icon “returned” to the spot where it was originally found. This phenomenon repeated itself several times until the locals decided to build a chapel at the site of the discovery, naming it Panagia Kavouradena, after the Greek word for "crabs."
